With a simple polygraphic recording (without EEG ) it is very easy to diagnose apnea

    Respiratory polygraphy : obstructive Apnea

A complete polysomnographic recording can underscore micro-awakenings ( of less than 10 seconds) or awakening reactions which can also trigger body movements.

  • Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS)
  • The hypnogram seems normal and the graph which summarizes the respiratory events does not show openly significant abnormalities.

We observe nevertheless that the curve of saturation in oxygen (SpO2) is unstable.

There is, in fact, an important number of micro-awakenings (arousal ) and we notice the presence of periodic limb movements (PLM).
This type of result should imply a newPSG recording by adding a esophageal probe .

This small tube which the patient has to "swallow" for the night, allows to measure intra-thoracic inspiratory pressures abnormally raised in the case of a heavy snoring with Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome.

If it is severe, with desaturations and frequent micro-awakenings, the UARS requires the same treatment as the syndrome of sleep apnea.
